The Coorong National Park is a great place to see some of the 230-odd species
of waders and other migratory birds that use the immediate area. Many species
travel from China, Japan and Alaska to summer in the shallow lagoons and
the Park and its surrounding Lower Murray Lakes are now listed on the RAMSAR
register of significant international wetland areas of the World.
Murray River Mouth
If
you have your own car, 15 minutes from the Cottages will have you
parked on Hindmarsh Island opposite the point where the Murray
River ends its 2,700 km journey through much of south eastern Australia
and enters the Southern Ocean. The narrow mouth has been in the
news of late with ongoing attempts to keep it open because of severely
reduced river flows impacted by the current drought and water usage
issues upstream.
