Picnics

While enjoying the beauty of the Peninsula, why not have a picnic. A copy of the brochure "Perfect Peninsula Picnics" is available at the Cottage, and picnic hampers can be arranged to be delivered to Joseph's Cottage for as little as $25pp (kids 12 and under  $12.50). The menus include a great selection of meats, breads, salads and dessert fare. Enquire at the time of making your booking.

Beaches

If your are in the mood for a dip, Goolwa Beach has great surf. Wide sandy beaches and seven lines of "offshore breakers’ that our son tells us are great for body boarding.

Just down the coast, Horseshoe Bay, at Port Elliot offers a picturesque, protected swimming beach for inexperienced surfers and on towards Victor Harbor, many of the beaches have been household names for generations of the locals.

Walking

The Fleurieu Peninsula offers some of the most rewarding walks in South Australia. The creek-side walk along the spring-fed Currency Creek, 8 kms north of Goolwa on the Strathalbyn Road offers an easy, serene ramble past Ngarrindjeri ‘scar’ trees, an old Cornish copper mine and leads to a delightful picnic spot complete with a small waterfall. Cox Scrub, on the Goolwa to Meadows Road offers springtime pleasures with delicate understorey native orchids and myriad wildflowers.

Golf

The area hosts several challenging 18 hole courses. South Lakes, at Goolwa, Victor Harbor and McCracken at Victor Harbor, the Fleurieu at Mt Compass. All have clubs and carts for hire and welcome visitors.

Winter Whale Watching

The Southern Right whale has been coming up from Antarctic waters to Encounter Bay to give birth and nestle their young since time immemorial and with whaling ceasing at the beginning of last century, their numbers are increasing each year. They can be seen from the cliff tops between Middleton, Port Elliot, Victor Harbor and the Bluff between June and September each year. They are often only 100 metres from the shore! Whale watching cruises depart from Granite Island during the winter months with bookings essential to (08) 8552 7555.

Fleurieu Peninsula Wineries

The wineries of Langhorne Creek, Currency Creek and McLaren Vale are less than a 30 minute drive, and we have negotiated Discount Vouchers on a great range of Fox Creek Wines, at Malpas Road, Willunga. Vouchers are included with bookings. 

The closest (a 5 minute drive) are at Currency Creek where Ballast Stone and Currency Creek wineries offer cellar door tastings and sales. At Langhorne Creek, 3 cellar doors offer a selection of wines and at Bremerton, an opportunity to buy a good selection of local specialty produce. At McLaren Vale, 54 cellar doors provides the opportunity to ‘meet your maker’, to learn of the winemaking processes, to taste and buy. Our favourite local wines are the Currency Creek 2001 Shiraz and the 2000 Lake Breeze Bernoota. McLaren Vale also has olive and almond retailers, great opportunities to buy fresh, seasonal local produce at the Willunga Farmers Market that operates every Saturday morning from 9am to 1pm and many, many fine restaurants.
